The effects of trauma on mental health and wellbeing

The detrimental impact of trauma on our developmental trajectory.

Trauma can have wide-ranging effects on an individual’s psychological wellbeing, influencing how they perceive themselves, others, and the world around them. Exposure to traumatic events may overwhelm a person’s capacity to cope, leading to persistent feelings of fear, helplessness, or shame. Over time, these experiences can disrupt core beliefs about safety, trust, and control, often contributing to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, or difficulties with concentration and decision-making.

The impact of trauma is not limited to emotional functioning; it is also closely linked to physiological and neurobiological processes. Traumatic stress can dysregulate the nervous system, resulting in chronic hyperarousal (e.g., heightened startle response, irritability, sleep disturbance) or hypoarousal (e.g., emotional shutdown, dissociation, fatigue). Prolonged activation of stress responses may affect physical health, increasing vulnerability to somatic complaints, chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues, and cardiovascular problems. In this way, trauma can shape both mental and physical wellbeing across the lifespan.

Trauma responses are adaptive attempts to survive overwhelming experiences.

Trauma also affects relational and social wellbeing. Individuals with trauma histories may experience difficulties with attachment, boundaries, and emotional intimacy, particularly if the trauma occurred within interpersonal or developmental contexts. Patterns of avoidance, mistrust, or heightened sensitivity to perceived threat can interfere with relationships, work functioning, and community engagement. Importantly, trauma responses are adaptive attempts to survive overwhelming experiences; with appropriate, trauma-informed support, individuals can develop increased emotional regulation, meaning-making, and resilience, supporting recovery and long-term wellbeing.
