FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Referrals, Medicare rebates, telehealth and what to expect from your first session.

Do I need a referral to access psychological therapy?

If you would like to claim the Medicare rebates then you will need a referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). A referral can give you access to a rebate for 6 psychology therapy sessions initially (10 sessions altogether every calendar year). Your GP can help you to organise a MHTP.

How much is the Medicare rebate for psychology sessions?

Medicare offers a rebate that reduces your out of pocket cost for psychology sessions. As of mid 2025, the typical rebate is approximately $98.95 for a standard 50 minute consultation with a general psychologist.

Are there any differences between in-person sessions and telehealth?

Both delivery methods are valid and effective options. A growing body of research indicates that psychological therapy delivered via telehealth can be as effective as traditional in-person therapy for many mental health concerns. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials show that outcomes are generally comparable between video-based teletherapy and face-to-face treatment, with similar reductions in symptoms and no significant differences in treatment engagement or dropout rates in many studies.

What should I expect from my first psychology session?

In your first psychology session, your therapist will focus on getting to know you and understanding what has brought you to therapy. You will have the chance to talk about your concerns, goals, and any questions you may have, at a pace that feels comfortable. It is a supportive, confidential conversation designed to help you feel safe and informed about the process moving forward.
